Railroad

Like most of this great nation, the arrival of the railroad made an enormous impact on the area. In 1877, the Southern Pacific Railroad became the first railroad to enter the Copper Corridor area. Starting in Hayden and moving Northeast to new mines, the railroad provided much needed transport of tools, equipment, and people. Two working railroads, the Phelps Dodge Morenci-Mining Railroad and the Copper Basin Railway, still move ore to this day.

Actual railroad cars can be seen at the Caboose Visitor Center in Superior Arizona and there is a train car in Hayden that is available for photographs or just to explore trains more closely. If you would like to see a working railroad, as it works with mining operations, you will likely see a car or two, tracks, and platforms for loading on Route 77 between Winkleman and Superior.
